The model

What a chapter is

A Community Chapter is a local network of women leading sustainability work in their own neighbourhood, operating within USAW's strategic goals and reporting into its shared results framework.

Chapters set their own priorities. What USAW supplies is the framework: training materials, the safeguarding and consent standards, access to the wider network, and a measurement system so local work is visible at national and global scale rather than staying informal and unfunded - which is the third of the three problems USAW was formed to address.

What chapters do

  • Run neighbourhood cleanups, tree planting and community gardens
  • Deliver Sustainability Education Workshops locally
  • Drive behaviour change in water resource management - reclamation, efficiency and stormwater capture
  • Build local networks of women leading sustainability efforts
  • Align local action to national and global environmental milestones

How to start one

Four steps

  1. Register your interest

Tell us where you are and what your community is dealing with. There is no minimum group size to start a conversation.

  2. Meet the Membership and Partnership Committee

A short conversation about fit, capacity and what local partners already exist. USAW works with local institutions rather than around them, so this step matters.

  3. Constitute the chapter

Agree the chapter’s focus against USAW’s strategic goals, appoint local leads, and adopt the chapter framework including the safeguarding and consent standards.

  4. Deliver and report

Run the first Community Action Project, and report participation and outcome data into the MEAL system so local work counts toward the shared results framework.

Start a chapter

There are no chapters running yet - USAW is in Phase 1 of its implementation strategy, and the first chapters are being formed now. That means founding chapter leads help set how the model works everywhere else.
